Cooperative Education Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  1. What's the difference between co-op and internships?  The primary difference is the amount of "time" and experience gained.  An internship only runs during the summer months.  A co-op position can be scheduled during the summer, spring, fall or most commonly, a combination of semesters.  Both internship and co-op experiences are good learning experiences.  However, many employers tend to favor co-ops because they have a greater and more in-depth experience.  Generally, in the summer months, an employer is able to train and acclimate a student, and then it's time for school to begin.  The additional time allows you to take ownership of a project and basically earn the experience and respect of a full-time employee.  Graduating with a degree AND 1+ years of related experience sets you apart from other candidates.
  1. When can I begin co-op?  First-time freshmen must complete two semesters before co-oping.  Transfer students are exempt from this and may begin co-oping immediately (it usually takes one semester to register and to obtain an offer). Graduate students with U.S. citizenship must complete one semester prior to co-oping.  International students must complete 9 months of academic studies at Missouri S&T prior to accepting a co-op position.
  1. Do I have to co-op for more than one semester?  No, you may choose to co-op for only one semester up to multiple semesters depending on the arrangements or the agreement with the employer.  International students can co-op for up to 12 months only.  Engineering graduate students are permitted to co-op in the summer months only, unless authorization is granted by their department.
  1. What is the co-op fee?  The co-op fee is the equivalent charge of the educational fee of one, in-state credit hour, regardless of out-of-state residence status.  Once you register your co-op position with the Career Opportunities Center, this fee will automatically be applied to your student account.
  1. Once I accept a co-op position, do I have to register it with the COC?  Yes, each co-op term - fall, winter, and summer - must be registered with the COC.
  1. How do I register my co-op?  "It's Quick and Simple" - Bring a copy of your offer letter to the COC, 3rd Floor Norwood Hall, and complete the co-op registration forms.
  1. I'm concerned about extending my graduation date to do a co-op?  Should I really do this?  This is a decision that only you can make and it depends upon your personal and professional goals.  In many cases, the advantages that co-op students gain relieve this concern about graduation dates.  It may seem like a set-back to delay your graduation right now, but it's actually putting you at the top when seeking a full-time position.  It's a huge advantage to try out your chosen profession, understand the industry, and gain confidence as a professional before graduation.  Your job offers will multiply, your salary will increase, and you will be in a position to "pick" your future.  Some students take classes during a summer semester or during their co-op months via internet or at a community college in order to manage a co-op without preventing a delayed graduation.   If you decide to enroll in a course while out on co-op, always confirm first with the Registrar's Office to verify that it will transfer to Missouri S&T.
  1. Can I earn credit for co-op and how?  Yes.  Credit is coordinated and awarded by the academic departments.   Each department has specific criteria for earning credit, and will advise you accordingly if it is offered.  It is important that you discuss credit options with your advisor before registering your co-op job with the COC.
