Review your Offer Before You Sign
Before signing any offer or onboarding paperwork, make sure you preview the following information:
- Pay-rate: are you getting paid fairly? Contact a Career Advisor to confirm that your compensation is in line with the current employment environment's average internship pay for your field.
- Job responsibilities: are you prepared to deliver on what is being asked of you? View the job description & clarify expectations with the hiring manager before committing.
- Company location: are you aware of the site location they are expecting you to travel to? Make sure you clarify this with your hiring manager & make arrangements to relocate if necessary. If you do not have the means to relocate, do not accept the offer.
- Legitimacy of the company: there are alot of scams out there! Make sure the company is legit & reliable.
If you want a Career Advisor to look over your offer letter, & we will help you understand your employment contract.
Do Not Renege on Your Offer
Reneging is the process of going back on an offer after signing the employment contract. If you have a job offer & have signed the papers to accept the position, it is extremely important to stick to your choice, regardless of if a different offer surfaces.
If you decide to break your employment contract, it is important to understand the repercussions:
- Possibility of getting blacklisted from the company & their partners
- Loss of networking contacts from that company
- Possible decrease in professional reputation
If you have a valid reason for going back on your offer (death in the family or can no longer afford to move to the relocation spot), it is easier to maintain a professional relationship with the company.
