What is the Benefit of Networking?

Networking is the process of building professional relationships with people who can help you learn, grow, and discover opportunities in your career field. Networking is not about asking for a job, but about creating genuine connections, learning from others’ experiences, and making yourself known in your industry.

So...why do we do it?

Networking is important when searching for internships because many opportunities are filled through referrals, recommendations, and personal connections before they are even publicly posted. Strong professional relationships can help you learn about openings, gain career advice, build confidence, and stand out to employers. By networking early, students can develop communication skills, expand their professional circle, and increase their chances of finding internships that align with their goals and interests.

How To Network as A Student

If you do not have a LinkedIn account, create one & build out your profile.

LinkedIn is a professional networking platform where students can connect with employers, alumni, faculty, & professionals in their field of interest.

Students can:

  • Create a professional profile that highlights experiences, skills, involvement, & career interests
  • Connect with classmates, professors, alumni, recruiters, & professionals

Make sure you fill out 100% of your LinkedIn profile to increase interactions. If you want a Career Advisor to look at your LinkedIn profile to ensure profile quality, schedule an appointment on Handshake.

If you have not claimed your S&T Handshake account, do it now!

Handshake connects students directly with employers & career opportunities. In addition to applying for internships, students can use Handshake to:

  • Register for career fairs, workshops, and employer events
  • Message recruiters and employers directly
  • Research companies and internship opportunities

Make sure to fill out your profile so employers can view your qualifications.

Get Comfortable with the Uncomfortable

Networking & reaching out to employers can feel uncomfortable at first, especially when you are unsure of what to say or fear rejection. However, professional growth often happens outside of a comfort zone.

Taking small steps such as introducing yourself at a campus event, asking a question after a presentation, or messaging a company representative online can build confidence over time. Most employers expect students to still be learning; they want to see students showing initiative, curiosity, & professionalism, which can leave a strong positive impression.

If you need help crafting your introduction to employers, attend a COER elevator pitch workshop or schedule an appointment with a career advisor.
